On Saturday, a military convoy was attacked with drones and explosives in the municipality of Guadalupe y Calvo, in Chihuahua, in the Sierra Tarahumara, leaving 4 elements of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) injured who were transferred in an Armed Forces helicopter to a hospital in Culiacán, Sinaloa for medical attention.
Among the injured is the recently appointed Brigadier General with a Diploma in the General Staff, Jorge Alejandro Gutiérrez Martínez, commander of the 42nd Military Zone based in Parral, Chihuahua, in addition to Eliseo Carlos N., Humberto N. and Aída Roxana N.
The soldiers were ambushed in the town of Dolores, between Guadalupe and Calvo, when the alleged aggressors dropped the explosives from a drone against the convoy that was carrying out night patrols in the area. In a video circulating on social media, the attackers can be heard talking about the attack and referring to the “big monster,” the target of the criminals, where the explosive is seen being aimed at the military vehicle.
“We’ve already killed them all. Look, look, they’re all dead. They’re pulling them. Look, look, they’re loading the bodies. They’re loading the bodies. They’re loading the bodies. The big monster, there are three bodies, pa. There are three bodies,” one of the attackers’ voices can be heard.
The victims managed to ask for help and an operation was immediately activated by land and air in the so-called “golden triangle” where the ambush took place.
This attack provoked a strong military operation by land and air in the area known as the “golden triangle” that includes the states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua in order to locate and arrest the probable perpetrators, and provide security to the population.
Sources from the National Defense Secretariat indicate that the ambush suffered by General Gutiérrez Martínez and his team was attributed to a cell of the Juárez cartel.
Investigation advances
On Monday, February 3, during the inter-institutional security meeting held at the Government Palace, priority was given to the attack suffered by the Sedena elements. The Chihuahua prosecutor, César Jáuregui Moreno, commented that the exchange of information will be carried out in the first instance with military commanders and the National Guard, with the objective of knowing the health status of the wounded and the details of the attack.
The prosecutor explained that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) will be in charge of handling the case, because it is an incident related to the use of explosives.
Jáuregui Moreno reported that the Sedena elements are out of danger, since the injuries suffered were wounds in the legs caused by shrapnel from the explosive.
