To honor the World Day of African Culture and Afro-Descendants, the Government of Solidaridad, through the Municipal Institute of Culture and Arts (IMCAS), is organizing the “Let’s Playa Roots, Afro-Descendant Music Festival” on February 6 and 7 at the 28 de Julio plaza, starting at 7 pm.
The festival aims to celebrate music, identity, and multiculturalism, bringing together international and local artists. Santiago Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, general director of IMCAS, emphasized the importance of creating cultural spaces to continue the exchange of races and ethnicities, reflecting Playa del Carmen’s diverse population.
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration has prioritized making minorities visible, a commitment followed diligently by Estefanía Mercado’s administration. January 24 marks the World Day of African Culture and Afro-Descendants. According to INEGI, Quintana Roo ranks fourth in Mexico for the largest number of Afro-Mexicans. The World Bank reports that one in four citizens in the Americas identifies with this population group.
