American citizens living in Chapala do not support Donald Trump

Americans living in the municipality of Chapala, Jalisco, say they are concerned about the threats that the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has made towards the Mexican government with his immigration and tariff policies, since, living in this part of the world, they would also be affected if these are carried out.

The opinions of the Americans living in Mexico do not reflect their feelings for their native country, but they consider that having the magnate in office again was a bad decision for those who will govern them.
“The people of the United States are very concerned because we love Mexico and they are our neighbors and you should be kind to your neighbors.”
“This is Donald Trump’s second term. We all know he says something, but it doesn’t happen exactly as he says, so I think we have to wait and see if he does the mass deportations he talks about. It’s going to cost the United States so much money that I don’t see how he could go ahead with it.”

“I think Donald Trump is one of the worst things that has happened on this entire planet. He divides people. He is a criminal who has not seen justice. He is creating a very bad relationship between the United States and Mexico, between the United States and Canada. He wants to take over the Panama Canal. I don’t understand how he was elected to office again.”

According to The Chapala Lake Society, in its latest data for 2023, they estimate about 7 thousand foreigners in Chapala (non-residents) and at least 11 thousand in the Ribera (Jocotepec, Chapala, Tuxcueca), who were interviewed by this media outlet and agree that the magnate presents “ridiculous” ideas that will not come to fruition, since the United States depends on Mexico, Canada and China as trading partners.

“Yes, and migration. Immigration is all global citizens. The United States is a country of immigrants. Before immigrants came to the United States, Mexicans were there first. Native Americans were there first. The United States is the country of immigrants. With climate change there will be more immigrants as the oceans rise and people need to live somewhere. How can we close our doors and allow people to suffer? I don’t understand.”

Regarding the work that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has done since she came to power, the Americans who live in the municipality of Chapala say they are followers of her initiatives and how she has not been intimidated by Donald Trump and his threats.

“The way she handles Donald Trump, the way she has handled other foreign affairs, I think she is a good candidate for him. Mexico should be proud.”

“I believe in Claudia Sheinbaum, she is a strong leader and she will stand up to Donald Trump. I hope not.”

American citizens living in the municipality of Chapala hope that Donald Trump’s threats will not be fulfilled, as they insist that these threats would not only affect countries like Mexico, Canada and China, but would also put those living in the United States in a difficult position, as labor would no longer be as cheap and their taxes would also be affected.

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, will take office for a second non-consecutive term next Monday, January 20.
