Canadian Pacific Railroad inaugurated a new rail bridge between Mexico and the United States, connecting Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, with Laredo, Texas. This bridge is the second international rail crossing in the region and reflects Mexico’s commitment to the growth of foreign trade, despite the protectionist context and political tensions between the two countries during the presidency of Donald Trump.

The new bridge, named after Patrick J. Ottensmeyer, joins the seven rail crossings that connect Mexico with the United States.

The reopening of the crossing in Ojinaga and the use of a railcar to connect the Isthmus of Tehuantepec with the East Coast of the United States are sought

The freight railroad, the only means of land transport without delays on the border, has unified operational and security parameters with North America, according to the Mexican Railway Association (AMF).

This bridge will expand the operational capacity on the border, where currently an average of 28 trains cross daily. The investment of 100 million dollars reflects the commitment of the railway companies to the development of the sector, making Mexico an international benchmark in terms of service and efficiency.

During the inauguration, the president of the AMF, Francisco Fabila, highlighted that this bridge symbolizes the support of the Mexican railway sector to cooperation and economic development, in contrast to the border closure policies.

In total, the seven land borders in states such as Baja California, Sonora and Tamaulipas allow an average of 61 trains to cross daily, transporting nearly half a million tons of cargo.

In addition, the AMF highlighted other projects, such as the reopening of the crossing in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, and the use of a railcar to connect the Isthmus of Tehuantepec with the East Coast of the United States, further boosting regional development and value chains.
