Customers leave 100 pesos tip, waitress demands more and doesn’t let them go

The incident sparked a debate about whether tips are mandatory and whether they should be the main source of income for workers
A viral video on TikTok has sparked an intense debate about tips and their obligation in Mexico. The account @geacielafuentes shared the recording where a waitress stopped a group of customers leaving the restaurant to complain about leaving only 100 pesos as a tip, which generated a heated discussion between both parties.

In the video, the customers explain that they did not have enough cash, so they left that amount, reminding the worker that they had previously asked her if she would expect a “good tip” and that she had responded negatively. Despite this, the waitress insisted that the amount was insufficient, briefly holding them at the door of the establishment.

The situation escalated to the point where both the customers and the waitress mentioned calling the police to resolve the conflict. Although they also tried to get the manager of the place to intervene, this did not happen, and the diners eventually left the place.

Is tipping mandatory?

The video has generated divided opinions on social media, with Internet users wondering if tips are mandatory. However, the law in Mexico establishes that tips are voluntary and depend exclusively on customers. Although some establishments try to add this charge to the bill or require it to leave the place, these practices are illegal and can be reported to the corresponding authorities.

The issue has opened a broader debate among users, as many consider tipping to be optional and a gesture of gratitude for good service. Others point out that for waiters, tips represent the majority of their income, due to the low salaries they receive in many restaurants.

“This would not happen if employers offered decent salaries, so that workers do not depend on tips,” argued some Internet users.

The debate reflects the complex working reality of restaurant workers, where tips are, in many cases, essential for employees’ livelihood, but their obligation remains a controversial issue in public opinion.
