A joint operation between Mexican and United States authorities in Colonia Chamizal, located in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, concluded without confirming the existence of a tunnel that could be being used for illegal human trafficking into U.S. territory.

According to the first reports from the Public Security Secretariat of the State of Chihuahua, although the identified tunnel does not represent a clandestine passage to the United States, investigations will continue in the coming days due to the possible presence of another similar structure in the area.

The operation, carried out on February 4, 2025, included the participation of various agencies from both countries.

On the United States side, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Border Patrol (CBP) intervened, while on the Mexican side, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the National Guard (GN), the Ministry of National Defense (Defensa), the State Investigation Agency of Chihuahua and the Ministry of Public Security participated.

This binational deployment had as its main objective to investigate the possible existence of a tunnel that could be being used for illicit activities related to human trafficking.

This is not the only tunnel found by the authorities of both nations. Just on January 10, it was announced that after several citizen complaints about the presence of people entering a sewer on the “Cuatro Siglos” Boulevard.

Upon arriving at the site, elements of the Defense, Navy, National Guard, SSPC, FGR and the State Investigation Agency found a record with an address to the United States.

Meanwhile, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Texas Border Patrol confirmed that the tunnel led to the United States.

“The agents here in the sector, together with multiple federal and state law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have discovered a tunnel made by human hands that comes from Ciudad Juarez to this area where we are located,” explained Claudio Herrera, spokesman for the US Border Patrol.

The authorities’ reports indicate that the tunnel connects to the sewers and drainage of El Paso, Texas.

It is presumed to be approximately 40 meters long and has a rudimentary ventilation and light system.

Construction tools such as shovels, picks and axes were found at the site, as well as flashlights, blowtorches and communication radios that were removed from the tunnel by Mexican and American authorities.

Bags with clothes and coats were also found. Unofficial reports point to the Juarez Cartel, specifically the La Linea faction.
