Red tide in Nayarit: what to do if you ate these foods?

6

The Nayarit Health Services alerted the population about the presence of a “red tide” in areas where bivalve mollusks, such as clams and mussels, were extracted, and a “precautionary closure” was declared.

What is red tide?

Red tide is the most common name for “algae blooms,” a natural phenomenon that occurs in the sea and at river mouths due to the presence of millions of microscopic algae, some of which are toxic, that turn the waters from gold to red.

What foods are recommended not to be consumed during red tide?

Nayarit residents should avoid eating the following foods until health authorities lift the precautionary closure:

Oyster
Clam
Mule foot
Snail
Hacha scallop
Mussel

Nayarit authorities recommend going to the nearest hospital if any of the foods mentioned have been consumed and the following symptoms appear within one or two hours:

Diarrhea
Fever
Nausea
Vomiting
Intense abdominal pain
Headache

Other general recommendations

Do not collect dead fish on the beach
Do not enter the sea if it smells bad, has a different color than normal, has foam, slime, algae mats or streaks that look like paint on the surface; There are dead fish or other animals that were washed ashore
Protect your pets and livestock from entering seawater, as they are more likely to get sick if they drink water or consume harmful algae
