Warning of more cases of migrants from Guanajuato deprived of their freedom: “It is not new”

The case of the woman from Salamanca deported from Texas, kidnapped in Tamaulipas and whose release is being asked for 10 thousand dollars, is not the only one.

“A countryman from Dolores was also kidnapped and they had to pay 5 thousand dollars to free him,” said Lolita Aviña Gómez, a migrant leader in Texas. She added that, even if they manage to get to Guanajuato, they are also waiting there to extort them.

For his part, Omar Silva, a lawyer and migrant leader in California, said that this fact shows that there is no public policy for safe return to Guanajuato.

The representative of the Guanajuato association of the State of Texas confirmed that they have had reports of kidnappings.

“But it is not new, they occur when deportations occur late at night or in the early morning. Even if the shelter is less than a mile away, the deportees can be taken by organized crime. What happened to the countryman from Dolores was that he was deported late at night and was kidnapped. They asked for a ransom of 5 thousand dollars, we managed to get him, he was released and is now with his family.”

In light of these situations, Aviña Gómez emphasized that, just as tariffs are being discussed, the issue of deportations should also be addressed and a protocol established to prevent them from being carried out during the night or early morning.

She said that, although deported countrymen are advised not to go far from the bridge, in this season of low temperatures they seek refuge and that is when they are kidnapped.

For his part, Omar Silva said: “This is not new! Migrants in transit through Mexico and those returning face mass kidnappings while Mexico and Guanajuato continue to say that they are prepared, when in reality they are not. There are no ‘Protection Protocols for Returning Migrants’ at the federal level, much less at the state level.”

The lawyer stressed that the federal and state governments must recognize that, for migrants, crossing or returning through Tamaulipas has always been dangerous.

“Tamaulipas has a strong influence from violent organized crime groups, which sometimes work in collusion with authorities. This has led to kidnappings, such as that of our countrywoman, and disappearances.”
