Álvaro Fernando Coria Jiménez, a member of the Celaya Public Security Secretariat (SSP) and head of security for Mayor Juan Miguel Ramírez Sánchez, was murdered on the morning of February 12 at his home.
According to initial reports, the homicide occurred around 9:20 a.m. in the Lázaro Cárdenas neighborhood in Celaya. Testimonies from neighbors indicate that a group of armed men arrived at the uniformed officer’s home and fired shots. They then fled.
Municipal SSP and National Guard (GN) officers arrived at the scene, who confirmed the commander’s death and identified him.
The incident was confirmed by the mayor hours later. “This morning we learned about the death of a collaborator and friend of ours. In the municipal government we strongly condemn all types of aggression against citizens and public servants; In the case of our colleague, he dedicated his life to providing security to citizens and to me,” he declared.
In a brief appearance before the media, Ramírez Sánchez offered his condolences to the victim’s family, friends and coworkers.
“Know that, since the beginning of my administration, what most affects all the citizens of Celaya and the state was, is and will be a priority: security. This aggression hurts us all and will not go unpunished because we will collaborate with state and federal authorities to find those responsible,” he added.
Finally, he asked citizens not to speculate. “Let us leave the investigations around the case in the hands of the authorities,” he asked.
Mayor of Celaya also has protection from the GN
In addition to the protection of the municipal SSP, he highlights that Juan Miguel Ramírez Sánchez is guarded by elements of the GN due to threats against him by organized crime.
It is worth remembering that the politician from Morena became president of Celaya after the murder of his partner, Bertha Gisela Gaytán, which occurred on April 1, 2024.
The events occurred in the community of San Miguel Octopan, Celaya, when the candidate of the cherry party was the victim of an armed attack. This incident occurred while she was in the middle of a campaign event surrounded by followers, who were waving Morena flags.
This episode not only culminated in the tragic death of Gaytán but also the death of a man and three wounded were reported.
What criminal groups operate in Guanajuato?
A report from the Ministry of National Defense (Defense), made public in June 2023, indicates that Guanajuato is disputed by four criminal organizations: the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS), the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (CSRL) and two offshoots of the Gulf Cartel (CDG).
Investigations indicate that the first to arrive in the state was the Sinaloa Cartel, but the so-called ‘four-letter cartel’ and the CSRL have been the most prominent in recent years.
Although the entity has a high record of crimes such as highway robbery, extortion and homicide, it stands out for being one of the states where fuel theft, better known as ‘huachicol’, is most recorded; one of the most profitable businesses for organized crime. However, in recent years the war between the two groups has focused on territorial control for the sale of methamphetamine, a drug also known as “crystal.”
