In Puebla capital, there are 779 elderly people who are part of the Municipal DIF System (Smdif) program, “Voluntary Packers”. This is attached to the Department of Family Strengthening, which invited more citizens from this sector to join.

Through the Smdif, which is headed by Maria Elise Budid, the aim is to offer spaces that allow older adults to reincorporate them into productive life.

Through collaboration agreements with self-service stores such as: La Gran Bodega, Soriana and Veana, the Smdfi links older adults to carry out the work of packers at the cash registers. It is important to note that the work day is divided into shifts of 5 hours each day, and the assignment is according to the proximity of their home to the stores in the agreement.

According to one of the beneficiaries of this program, Mrs. Estela Rico Ortiz, being a volunteer packer changed her life: “I feel good, I feel useful, both for myself and for the people who come, I feel happy, I am happy to come and collect some money, it helps us a lot because here we also have fun, we talk among colleagues, with the cashiers, we joke, we take it very easy,” she said.
