Sheinbaum’s immediate intervention is requested in Oaxaca, “a territory of impunity”

In light of the abandonment of the inhabitants of the community of San Isidro Platanillo by the government of Salomón Jara after an ambush on Thursday that left 3 people dead and the presence of an armed group in the area, more than 100 social organizations and human rights defenders have requested the immediate intervention of the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, and the Attorney General’s Office, since they currently consider that Oaxaca under the Jarista administration has become “a territory of impunity.”

Through a letter released, the NGOs condemned the armed attack that ended the lives of 3 members of the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Zone of the Isthmus (Ucizoni), this in Platanillo, a community belonging to Santo Domingo Petapa.

After this attack, the organizations emphasize that the community remains in serious crisis, for which reason they demanded “immediate responses from the Mexican State and the application of urgent measures. We do not accept simulations or delays.”

They held the federal and state governments responsible for this crime due to the lack of attention and the impunity and violence that is experienced not only in Oaxaca, but throughout the country, since the lack of justice encourages more violence and leaves the victims in total abandonment.

“We will not allow the blood of our people to continue being the cost of corruption and the inability of those who govern. In Oaxaca, the power vacuum and the indifference of the authorities have turned the state into a territory of impunity.”

And they pointed out that the speeches issued by the government of Salomón Jara are nothing more than “a simulated peace,” but in reality the murder of members of the social movement continues “impunity is the direct responsibility of the Mexican State and the government of Oaxaca,” they pointed out.

The document lists 4 demands:

  1. To the president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to assume her responsibility and act immediately in the face of these crimes. Violence against indigenous peoples is a direct consequence of the policies of your government.
  2. To the Attorney General of the Republic and to the Attorney General of the State of Oaxaca, to investigate, arrest and punish those materially and intellectually responsible for these murders. Enough of impunity and of making deals with justice for those who dispossess and murder.
  3. To the government of the State of Oaxaca and to the Ministry of the Interior, to act immediately and dictate urgent protection measures to stop the attacks against the community of El Platanillo and other communities at risk.
  4. To the Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, to implement real and effective actions to guarantee the safety of community defenders in the region. No more bureaucratic measures that come too late.
