Colima is ranked fourth nationwide in the 2018-2024 drug dealing ranking, according to statistics from the report “Mexico in Numbers: Drug dealing in Mexico, historical figures” published in December 2024.
With 13,778 complaints for this crime, it is one of the main indicators of the presence of organized crime.
“That is to say, the sale and distribution through social networks and in increasingly attractive presentations for young people is somewhat endangered or raises alarms about the way in which the product is distributed,” explains Juan A. Fernández Velázquez, a specialist in the history of violence.
When detecting drug consumption and sale mostly in the coastal municipalities of Tecomán and Manzanillo, prevention authorities carry out actions in red-light neighborhoods and schools, especially to lower drug consumption rates.
“We address what preventive fairs are, we take these preventive fairs to both educational institutions and neighborhoods, what is the purpose of preventive fairs, because it is to generate this social proximity of us as elements towards the citizens,” warned Cecilia Valencia, from Crime Prevention in the municipality of Tecomán.
According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, during 2024 alone, 1,549 investigation files were registered in the state, with January and February being the months with the highest number of crimes with 155 and 161 respectively.
“We go and talk to them about addictions, how to prevent them, what consumption is based on, if you are a consumer, everything that can be out of tune with you not only as a person physically but in the family matter, in your studies, with your neighbors, in the neighborhood.”
As of February 15, 2025, 73 people have been arrested for crimes against health involving possession of several doses of drugs, with the municipalities of Tecomán and Manzanillo having the most arrests, as publicly reported by the Colima Prosecutor’s Office and the Secretariat of Public Security.
