“Mexico is largely ruled by cartels, especially now”: Trump

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Mexico is largely governed by drug cartels.

The president made these statements at a press conference in Florida when asked about CIA drone flights over Mexican territory to monitor drug traffickers.

“I have a very good relationship with Mexico, but I think Mexico is largely governed by the cartels, and that’s a sad thing to say. If they wanted help with that, we would give it to them,” he said.

Trump insisted that “Mexico has been run by the cartels for years, but especially now,” and accused Mexican authorities of having “allowed millions of people” to enter the United States through the common border.

Trump added that since he took office on January 20, he has managed to have “the safest border” ever and congratulated the Border Patrol because “they are doing incredibly.”

Several American media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, reported on Tuesday that the CIA is carrying out drone flights to monitor drug cartels in Mexico.

These covert flights, which began during the administration of former Democratic President Joe Biden (2021-2025), are looking for the location of fentanyl laboratories.

Upon coming to power, Trump signed an executive order ordering the State Department to declare drug cartels as foreign terrorist groups.

According to The New York Times, the State Department is updating its terrorist list to include the Sinaloa Cartel, the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, the Cartel del Noreste, the Familia Michoacana and the Carteles Unidos, located in Mexico.
