Progress on the Interoceanic Corridor in Chiapas, infrastructure ready for 2026

2

During the “morning meeting of the people”, Vice Admiral Juan Carlos Vera Mijares presented the progress of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, an ambitious project aimed at promoting the economic and social development of the region. This corridor integrates the states of Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca and Chiapas, covering more than 105 municipalities and strengthening connectivity between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic.

The corridor has four strategic ports: Coatzacoalcos and Salina Cruz in Veracruz, Dos Bocas in Tabasco and Puerto Chiapas, which are interconnected by a 1,200-kilometer railway. Within the Isthmus strip, ten Development Poles for Well-being have been established, with the aim of attracting investments and generating jobs. In Tabasco, one pole is located in Teapa, while in Tapachula, Chiapas, two more are being developed.

The Huixtla elevated viaduct crosses this municipality and covers from the El Relicario colony to the limits with Tuzantán to the east, a 3-kilometer construction

One of the key aspects of this project is the overseas connection, which will allow the ports to integrate into the main international trade routes through the Pacific and the Atlantic.

Progress of the FA Line: From Coatzacoalcos to Palenque
The FA Line, which connects Coatzacoalcos with Palenque, Chiapas, has been completely rehabilitated in its 310 kilometers of extension. This route includes 91 bridges and 667 drainage works. Since its reactivation on September 13, 2024, it has transported 19,812 passengers and mobilized 29,677 tons of cargo.

Currently, work is underway on the construction of two rail yards in Roberto Ayala (Huimanguillo) and Pakal-Na (Palenque), in addition to nine sidings and the Roberto Ayala-Dos Bocas access road, with the aim of improving operational efficiency.

Progress of Line K: From Ixtepec to Ciudad Hidalgo

Line K, the longest of the project, connects Ixtepec, Oaxaca, with Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, through 459 kilometers of rail tracks. Its rehabilitation includes 427 bridges, 613 drainage works and 14 stations. Due to weather conditions, which make progress difficult, the works have been divided into three sections:

Section 1: Ixtepec-Tonalá (87% progress)

Section 2: Tonalá-Huixtla

Section 3: Huixtla-Ciudad Hidalgo

The overall progress of the project is 65.81 percent and it is estimated that it will be completed in the second quarter of 2026. However, the first section to Tonalá will enter into operation in June of this year.

Huixtla Viaduct Progress
Huixtla will have a three-kilometer elevated viaduct that will replace the 14 level crossings of the original route, avoiding the division of the city and improving mobility. Currently, the work is 95 percent complete and its inauguration is scheduled for April 2025. This viaduct will include parks, walkways, sports and recreational spaces for the community.

Wellbeing Development Poles
Ten Wellbeing Development Poles have been established along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, of which eight have already been awarded through international public tender (four in Veracruz and six in Oaxaca).

In Tapachula, there are two properties for the agroindustry and pharmaceutical industry, located 12 kilometers from the Tapachula International Airport and adjacent to ASIPONA in Puerto Chiapas. These properties will be subject to international public tender on March 15, 2025.

The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec represents a project of great impact for the south-southeast of Mexico, consolidating itself as a strategic axis of economic development, connectivity and social wellbeing in the region.
