Querétaro schools began to apply this Thursday the law promoted by the governor of the state, Mauricio Kuri González, which prohibits the use of mobile devices in the schools of the district, the first of its kind in the North American country.
The governor of the state pointed out that what is sought is to generate awareness about the psychological and social effects that the constant use of cell phones and content on social networks can have.
Querétaro thus becomes the first state to have strict regulations on the use of cell phones in schools, and that will be applied in public and private schools for elementary and high school students.
“I think we are not seeing the seriousness of the matter, it is a very worrying issue that can cause the lives of children, cause the ‘chavitos’ (kids) to be unhappy, that they have a child with anxiety, that has a desire to die because they do not meet the requirements that they see on social networks and that part must be taken care of a lot,” said Kuri González.
For her part, Irene Quintanar, head of the Basic Education Services Unit in the State of Querétaro (USEBEQ), commented in an interview with EFE that awareness work was already being done with teachers, students and parents in view of the entry into force of the law.
“Prior to this we held several workshops, we worked on digital civics, we have a program ‘one, two, three for peace’. We have to work and live in healthy coexistence and we worked on all of that in the last school year and from now on what we will do is going to be a formative issue, a preventive issue,” explained the general coordinator of USEBEQ.
Likewise, parents believe that it is a positive initiative to wean young people off the constant use of cell phones and to have good communication with their children to know their activities in the digital environment.
This initiative starts in the state of Querétaro as a test and example for the other states of the Mexican Republic.
“Here it could be ‘let’s see how it works’, although I would like it to be a law or a rule that is managed, not just throughout the Republic but opening up more to other places […] you cannot enter class with your cell phone, that is, you enter and leave your cell phone, if you have free time or leave class you can take your cell phone,” analyzed Raymundo García, a parent from the capital, Querétaro.
