The Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Corridor, one of the federal government’s most ambitious projects, will connect the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific through a multimodal logistics platform. According to Vice Admiral Juan Carlos Vera Mijares, director of the project, the railway line that connects Huimanguillo, Tabasco, with the Olmeca Refinery in Dos Bocas will be completed in the last quarter of 2026, consolidating a milestone in national infrastructure.

Railway infrastructure under development: K and Fa lines

Line K, which connects Ixtepec, Oaxaca, with Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, is currently 65% complete and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026. Lines Z and FA are already operating at 100%, transporting thousands of passengers and tons of cargo. These roads will not only facilitate international trade, but will also boost regional development through strategic industrial and agro-industrial hubs.

The project includes 10 Development Hubs for Well-Being, distributed across four states: Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Chiapas. These hubs have specific vocations, such as logistics, petrochemicals, electromobility and green energy. In Teapa, Tabasco, a key hub is being reactivated with a donated 100-hectare property, while the Ixtepec Hub will focus on renewable energy after completing indigenous consultations and public assemblies.

Construction progress: right of way and tenders

On the route from Roberto Ayala to Dos Bocas, essential for connecting the refinery with the corridor, 39% progress is reported in the release of the right of way. It is expected that in six months it will be completely cleared to begin construction in May. This section, along with other tendered segments, is part of a comprehensive plan that seeks to transform the region into a global logistics hub.

Economic and social impact of the project

President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that the Interoceanic Corridor will not only connect oceans, but will also generate jobs and sustainable development. “It is very advanced, it is going very well,” she said, underlining the importance of the connections with the Mayan Train and the integration of sectors such as agribusiness and pharmaceuticals. This project will strengthen the local and national economy, benefiting more than 4.6 million inhabitants in the region.

Security and protection in the overseas zone

The Interoceanic Corridor has a 2,400-member Marine infantry brigade to protect the overseas zone, ensuring a safe connection between both oceans. In addition, the seaports and the railway network are designed to optimize the transport of cargo and passengers. With these measures, the government ensures that the project is not only efficient, but also safe and sustainable for local communities.
