The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) will invest 500 million pesos this year to clear the nearly 100 kilometers of the Las Nutrias River, also called guigu bicu nisa -in Zapotec-, which runs through nine Isthmus municipalities.

The municipal secretary of the Juchiteco government, Mariano Rosado, reported that the CIIT will contribute the cost of the cleaning work, including a specialized dredge from the Navy (Semar), with the logistical support of the authorities of the nine municipalities.

Currently, along the tributary, contaminated by water from the municipal drainage systems and by tons of solid waste, as well as lilies, there are willow trees up to four meters high, which prevent oxygenation.

Subsequently, the CIIT contemplates in its studies various alternatives to prevent the sewage coming from the nine municipalities from continuing to contaminate the guigu bicu nisa, because none of the treatment plants have been working for years.

With the cleaning of the Las Nutrias River and the subsequent application of artificial wetlands to treat the sewage, the contamination of the Upper Lagoon of the Gulf of Tehuantepec, where the tributary flows into the river, will stop, explained Mariano Rosado.

Due to the high concentration of solid waste, trees and lilies, during rainy periods, the Las Nutrias River overflows in the lower parts of the towns, floods homes and puts people’s lives at risk. We want to avoid all these effects, said the municipal secretary.
