The National Council of Morena and the government of Tamaulipas distanced themselves from Juan Pablo Penilla Rodríguez, alleged legal advisor to Ismael El Mayo Zambada, former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, who was allegedly a public servant and honorary advisor to the State Executive.
After El Mayo Zambada requested through a letter consular assistance from Mexico so that he could be repatriated and not be sentenced to death in the United States, the alleged letter sent by the drug trafficker who was kidnapped and taken to New Mexico in July 2024 began to circulate.
The request mentions that Frank Pérez is the private defender and sole lawyer of El Mayo Zambada, while his legal advisors in Mexico are the Law Graduates Juan Pablo Penilla Rodríguez and Juan Manuel Delgado Gonzales.
The letter from the boss indicates that it is the obligation of the Mexican State to intervene to enforce and respect not only the human rights of El Mayo, but that it must intervene so that the bilateral relationship between both countries does not result in “a collapse” since his arrest was “irregular and illegal way in which the undersigned was placed at the disposal of the authorities of the United States of America.”
After this, on social networks some political actors assured that Juan Pablo Penilla was involved in the campaign of the now president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.
“No one is surprised that the lawyers of El Mayo Zambada are carnal and are on a roll with the Narco Government of Morena. They have a lot in common with many crooks of the Narco Party of Morena. Juan Pablo Penilla, one of the lawyers of Mayo Zambada, was in Claudia Sheinbaum’s campaign and is “Honorary Advisor” to Américo Villareal (Governor of Tamaulipas,” wrote the federal deputy of the PAN, Federico Döring, in his account X.
Another of the people who joined the complaint was Simón Levy, Javier Lozano, among others.
For this reason, the CEN of Morena indicated in an information card that “after an exhaustive review in our databases and, contrary to what was said by the opposition, THERE IS NO RECORD that Juan Pablo Penilla Rodríguez was part of the legal advice of the campaign of our Party-Movement in said electoral process”
The party indicated that they are committed “to truth and transparency, as well as to the defense of the principles that President López Obrador taught us and that gave rise to our Movement: ‘do not lie, do not steal and never betray the people of Mexico'”.
For its part, The Tamaulipas government indicated that “Juan Pablo Penilla Rodríguez is not a public servant, nor an honorary advisor to the State Executive.”
It added that the document circulating on social networks showing the designation as honorary advisor of Penilla Rodríguez, and which is signed by Governor Américo Villareal, “was annulled after an evaluation of the proposals of civil organizations as stated in the Official State Gazette.”
“The State Government disclaims any misuse that may have been given to the document that has circulated on social networks,” reads a publication on the official X account of the Tamaulipas government.
