At the Sandos Playacar hotel in Playa del Carmen, 300 guests were reportedly poisoned, as they reported severe cases of gastroenteritis. Personnel from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Protection and the Municipal Police were present at the hotel complex to investigate the incident.
An Argentine guest reported that he and his family had severe diarrhea and vomiting in the last 2 days. The hotel referred them to the establishment’s doctor, who recommended that they “not drink anything that is served in a glass,” according to Noticaribe.
Likewise, “the hotel does not want to be held responsible for what happened,” the guest told the authorities, adding that there were more guests with the same symptoms.
The authorities are investigating the events with interviews with the affected guests, inspecting the facilities regarding the preparation of food and drinks, and collecting samples for toxicological analysis.
The Ministry of Health initiated the corresponding protocols to determine additional measures depending on the preliminary results of the investigation. For its part, the Ministry of Tourism is evaluating the implications for the image of the tourist destination and the establishment’s response procedures in the event of an emergency.
