A café in Chelem, Yucatán, has reported an incident involving a pair of foreign tourists who, after consuming food and drinks, refused to pay their bill, claiming the quality did not match the menu photographs.

Coastal Café Chelem, the establishment in question, assured that the images on their menu are authentic and unedited, accurately depicting the dishes served. Despite their complaints, the tourists consumed their entire order and left without paying.

Incident Report by Coastal Café

The Coastal Café Chelem took to Facebook to share details of the incident, expressing their disapproval of such behavior. “Today we had a very unpleasant situation at Coastal Café. Two foreign customers consumed their drinks and then refused to pay for the drinks and food, claiming that the quality did not match the photos on our menu,” the post read.

The restaurant emphasized its commitment to offering high-quality products and regretted the disrespect shown by some customers. “Despite their complaints, the couple consumed everything served and even took what was left,” the post continued.

According to the café staff, the tourists argued with employees and were dismissive in their complaint. Although it was explained that the menu images are real and accurately represent the dishes, the tourists insisted the quality did not meet their expectations and refused to pay.

Call for Respect in the Restaurant Sector

Coastal Café also called on other local restaurants to be vigilant against similar incidents and not allow diners to abuse their staff. “We will not allow anyone to treat our team in a despotic manner. Additionally, we believe it is important to notify our fellow restaurateurs about these types of incidents to prevent similar situations,” the café stated.

The café highlighted that they have always promptly resolved any valid complaints, but in this case, there was no justification for the refusal to pay. The post received various reactions from internet users and frequent customers, who showed support for the business and condemned the tourists’ behavior. Many emphasized that such incidents negatively impact small businesses and stressed the importance of raising awareness to prevent them in the future.
