This Wednesday, some individuals evicted families who had set up their homes on a plot of land located on 187th Street diagonally between 60th and 58th, in the La Guadalupana neighborhood, south of Mérida, which led to a confrontation.
The events occurred shortly after 10 a.m. and, according to the evicted people, about 30 individuals arrived at the site in a truck to demolish and set fire to the houses, in which about 60 families lived.
“They even burned down a house here with a baby inside, just because the lady was quick and saved herself with her baby; also, some people tried to evict us with machetes,” said one of the victims.
Members of the Public Security Secretariat of Yucatan arrived in the area to calm the tensions, while personnel from the State Investigation Police also arrived to carry out the corresponding investigations since there were injuries with a knife.
Agents from the State Investigation Police (PEI) also came to control the situation and carry out the necessary procedures.
So far, 12 people involved in the eviction have been arrested and a van allegedly used by the aggressors has been seized.
The authorities are working to clarify the events and determine the identity and motives of those responsible.
Also, personnel from the Housing Institute of the State of Yucatan (IVEY) are expected to arrive in the next few hours to make a report that will help clarify the situation. Who legally owns the land in question?
Meanwhile, tensions persist in the area, and the affected residents are demanding justice and clarity about their situation.
