Crisis in Campeche: Third-Highest Rate of Femicides in Mexico

2

The state of Campeche has seen a distressing rise in femicide cases in recent years, placing it among the top three states in Mexico with the highest rates of this crime, according to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP). This surge reflects a deepening crisis of violence against women.

From September 2021 to the present, the Attorney General’s Office of Campeche (FGECAM) has opened 32 investigations into femicide, involving 35 victims, including young girls and adolescents. The year 2023 marked a grim milestone, with 12 femicides, the highest annual figure recorded in the state.

The alarming increase is attributed to factors such as widespread impunity and ineffective responses by local authorities. Advocacy groups like the Network of Women and Men for a Public Opinion with a Gender Perspective in Campeche (Redmyh) have criticized the re-victimization of survivors and a lack of societal outrage over these atrocities.

A Tragic Start to 2025

This year has already seen its first femicide: the murder of a young mother in Ciudad del Carmen. Her body was discovered at a property in the Villas de San José subdivision. This harrowing case adds to the long list of gender-based crimes that have shaken the state.

Urgent Action Required

Campeche’s situation underscores a systemic failure in ensuring security and justice for women. Immediate measures are needed to implement effective public policies to prevent and combat gender-based violence. Equally crucial is fostering societal awareness and action to address and eradicate this pervasive issue.

The time for collective action is now—both from authorities and society at large—to put an end to this cycle of violence affecting countless women in Campeche and across the nation.
