The fight against femicide in Mexico has made significant progress in recent years, including the classification of the term as a crime and its inclusion in the Federal Penal Code in July 2011; however, despite the efforts of governments and civil organizations, murders of women are recorded daily at the national level.
According to information from UNAM, femicide is the highest point of violence against women worldwide, because unlike the murders of men, the majority of these cases are committed by relatives of the victim or by their current or former partner.
Added to this is the fact that, according to the United Nations (UN), the murder of women commonly results from a series of aggressions suffered by the victim, ranging from psychological, physical and sexual, to patrimonial and family-related, which can occur at home, in the workplace, in schools and in public spaces.
However, they can also be committed by people unknown to the victim, through other crimes such as rape, although they could also be associated with harmful practices such as female genital mutilation, hate crimes, armed conflicts or organized crime.
In which year of the last decade were there more cases of femicides in Mexico?
The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, in its report published last February, from 2015 to 2025, the number of murders of women classified as femicides in Mexico has had various variations, although there was one year in which a significant increase was recorded.
According to the same information, 2021 was the year in which more cases of femicides have been recorded in the last decade, with a total of 1,019 victims.
It should be noted that 2021 was the second year of confinement due to the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic and the third year of the government of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in which not only was an increase in femicides reported, but also in domestic violence and sexual abuse.
The same document details that 2015 was the year with the fewest murders of women classified as femicides, with 428 cases, followed by 2016, with 647.
In the following years, cases increased, since in 2017, 768 victims were reported; in 2018, 920 more; in 2019, 970; and 2020, with 976.
In 2022, there were 981 victims of femicides; in 2023, 853 victims; In 2024, 839 cases were reported, and so far in 2025, 54 have been reported.
However, in 2024, according to the Secretariat, a total of 6,837 women were murdered in Mexico, which is equivalent to 18.7 homicides per day nationwide.
Of that total, 839 homicides were classified as femicides, 2,564 more as intentional homicides, and the remaining 3,434 as negligent homicides.
