DHL Express, a courier and parcel service provider, has completed the expansion of its air hub at Querétaro International Airport (AIQ), consolidating its position as the company’s most advanced airport in Latin America.
This Thursday, the company inaugurated the new facilities, in which it invested $120 million to expand, modernize, and automate the air operations center.
The new facilities cover approximately 30,000 square meters. This unit has a capacity to handle 41,000 shipments per hour and has 44 automated lines for the transport of goods, according to company information.
With this expansion, DHL Express tripled its operational capacity in the state and introduced cutting-edge automated technology.
The Querétaro airport has become a strategic hub for the company’s domestic and international operations; with this expansion, it strengthens its presence in the region, where it will seek to serve SMEs and meet the demands of relocation.
The CEO of DHL Express Mexico, Antonio Arranz, recalled that in 2010, they were the first courier and parcel delivery company to establish their hub at the AIQ (Airport of Mexico City).
“Since then, we have invested in the company, which now occupies a key position in our operations network, not only nationally but also internationally. This investment is a demonstration of the commitment and confidence we have in the state and in Mexico’s potential for the logistics sector worldwide,” he stated.
According to the company, Querétaro has a strategic location that is key to its consolidation as a logistics epicenter.
DHL Express CEO John Pearson emphasized that Querétaro is a trade hub, as well as a fertile region for manufacturing investment and logistics connections.
In February, the AIQ registered 7,000 tons of cargo, ranking it the fourth airport by volume, stated the Secretary of Sustainable Development, Marco Antonio Del Prete Tercero. He added that DHL’s expansion will impact both local and regional economic development.
The expansion project includes nearly 15,000 square meters of warehouse space and a 13,300 square meter yard, among other features, explained Luis Felipe Rivas Villanueva, General Director of Terminal Logistics Kapital.
This Thursday, Governor Mauricio Kuri González symbolically turned on the hub’s mechanical system, inaugurating the facilities.
Logistics Hub
From the Querétaro air hub, DHL Express operates 12 domestic flights daily (both arrivals and departures), connecting the state with Mérida, Cancún, Monterrey, Ciudad Juárez, Mazatlán, Cabo San Lucas, Torreón, Hermosillo, Chihuahua, Villahermosa, Culiacán, and Tijuana; a total of 33 interconnected cities.
Additionally, there is one international flight daily connecting the state with the Cincinnati hub in the United States.
With the hub’s expansion, new air and land routes will also be added, with the aim of streamlining deliveries between the Bajío and central regions with southern and northern Mexico.
