Querétaro seeks to regulate Airbnb without affecting hoteliers

2

Adriana Vega Vázquez Mellado, Secretary of Tourism for Querétaro, reported that a joint strategy is being developed with the Airbnb platform to avoid conflicts with hoteliers and foster balanced competition. She explained that the company has shown interest in collaborating so that its business model complements the state’s tourism offering without conflicting with traditional lodging services.

Vega Vázquez Mellado noted that there is currently no accurate record of the number of Airbnb operators in Querétaro, so a market analysis and study is necessary to understand all the perspectives involved. This study will be key to defining appropriate regulations that meet the needs of the local tourism sector.

She also emphasized that the Ministry of Finance will also have to intervene in the negotiations to ensure that the regulations consider fiscal and economic contribution aspects. Although most Mexican states do not have specific regulations for lodging platforms, Vega Vázquez Mellado emphasized that these alternatives can contribute to tailored tourism, enriching the diversity of options for visitors.

Talks between the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Finance, and Airbnb continue, with the hope of finding a balance that benefits both local entrepreneurs and established hoteliers, thus promoting the orderly and sustainable growth of tourism in Querétaro.
