The iconic Cenaduría Mary, formerly known as Cenaduría Memo, located on Hidalgo Street, celebrated its 56th anniversary on March 3rd with a grand celebration filled with music and Mexican snacks, bringing together locals and visitors to the town, as well as municipal authorities, who attended and presented the restaurant with an award. “For its long history of authentic homemade Mexican food since 1969, conquering the palates of the town’s residents and visiting tourists,” read the award.
“I am very pleased to be able to share with you this celebration, these 56 years of history, the efforts of a great Ajijic family, the Robledo Vázquez family. It is a great honor for us to be part of it and to come and recognize the work and efforts of this family, which is why we want to present this recognition to their work and to Cenaduría Mary, who has been here working here for so many years, serving Ajijic’s visitors and residents,” said Mayor Alejandro Aguirre Curiel.
For his part, Ajijic’s front-of-house manager, Timoteo Aldana Pérez, congratulated them, recalling everyone’s experiences at the cenaduría. “Congratulations on your 56th anniversary of opening this great Mexican restaurant. We have so many memories at this restaurant. They’ve changed three times, but they’ve always had the same flavor, and it’s taken away all our hunger.”
“I feel very happy, very grateful to all the customers. We’re going to celebrate with music, dinner, and fresh water. It’s a way to thank those who have been with me all this time,” an excited Mrs. María shared in an interview with Semanario Laguna.
Those in attendance confirmed that they’ve been visiting Cenaduría Mary for years, and that the food has always been delicious. “I’ve been coming here since I was a baby. I like coming here because they’re good people. My favorites are the pozole with tacos and the enchiladas, and many of the other items on the menu.” “I would tell everyone to come and experience Mexican food,” shared one attendee, while another commented, “The food has always been delicious. I’ve been coming here for years. My favorite dish is the tostadas de pata, cuerito, and trompa. Come here whenever you come to town.”
The celebration began with a Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary, attended by family, friends, and clients of Mrs. María Hilda Robles Vázquez, who currently runs the business. The celebration then continued outside on the street, which was closed to vehicular traffic, decorated, and equipped with tables and chairs so attendees could enjoy a delicious pozole. The atmosphere was enlivened by the musical group La Misma Banda, which got the audience dancing and singing.
La Cenaduría Mary continues to be a symbol of tradition and flavor in Ajijic, consolidating itself as a beloved place to enjoy typical Mexican food. Mary’s Diner is located at 25 Hidalgo Street in the downtown area of the Magic Town. Its hours are from 7:00 p.m. until after 11:00 p.m.
