The U.S. Department of State issued a security alert to its citizens not to travel to Tamaulipas due to security concerns.
The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros issued the alert as a Level 4 alert due to security concerns related to crime and kidnapping.
The U.S. Consulate General announced that, starting Monday, March 24, it will increase the presence of security personnel at all international crossings connecting Matamoros, Tamaulipas, with Brownsville, Texas, including the Gateway International Bridge (Puente Nuevo), as a precautionary measure.
The Consulate warned that due to the security checks being implemented, there will be delays in access to the U.S. from Mexico, increasing wait times at international crossings.
The U.S. Consulate General advised its employees and residents to avoid traveling across the Gateway International Bridge and to allow additional time for all border crossings.
