Michoacán’s culinary riches are also nominated for the 2025 Best of Mexico awards, and carnitas are the food competing nationally in the category “State with the best traditional dish that expresses the essence of Mexican gastronomy.”
This Michoacán dish is emblematic of municipalities such as Quiroga, Tacámbaro, Santa Clara del Cobre, and Tarímbaro, and is part of the most special celebrations, where the whole family gathers to enjoy it. It is cooked over low heat, so the pork is tender and juicy. Although there are many recipes for its preparation, in Michoacán, they have a unique touch because they are cooked in copper pots. Carnitas are also part of our state’s cultural heritage.
For this reason, they are nominated in the national competition organized by the magazine México Desconocido, along with six other Michoacán attractions, reported Roberto Monroy García, head of the Michoacán Tourism Secretariat (Sectur).
The other categories in which the state is also competing are:
- Best City for a Destination Wedding (Morelia).
- Best Magical Town for a Family Getaway (Tlalpujahua).
- Destination with the Best Health and Wellness Experience (Los Azufres).
- Best Magical Town for Experiencing Our Artisan Tradition (Santa Clara del Cobre).
- Best Celebration to Connect with Our Roots and Customs (K’uínchekua).
- Best Experience Getting Closer to Animal Life (Monarch Butterfly Migration).
