Grecia Quiroz, widow of the murdered mayor of the Mexican municipality of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, urged federal intervention in the investigation into the crime on Tuesday, after the Michoacán Prosecutor’s Office (western Mexico) intensified its inquiries into her possible relationship with a person charged in connection with the murder, which occurred on November 1, 2025.
Quiroz went to the facilities of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (Femdo) in Mexico City, where she submitted a written request addressed to Attorney General Ernestina Godoy, formally asking that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) take over the investigation.
Quiroz assumed office as mayor of Uruapan, located in Michoacán, western Mexico, following the murder of her husband during a Day of the Dead celebration in the municipality, an incident that sparked a wave of national outrage.
In the document, submitted in her capacity as an “indirect victim,” she accused the investigation carried out in Michoacán of being marked by “major biases,” while arguing that authorities have attempted to distract from the search for justice and that their actions “only favor the real killers of Carlos (Manzo).”
In statements to the media, Quiroz considered it “urgent” for the FGR to take over the investigation in light of what she described as “political issues” surrounding the case.
“I trust the federal government and (…) I hope that the case is not politicized at all there in the state of Michoacán and that they, here at the federal level, have all the evidence and that they are the ones who investigate,” she said.
In this regard, she asserted that the investigation in Michoacán is “practically closed,” and therefore insisted that the FGR take over the case to prevent the investigation from remaining divided between state and federal authorities, in addition to the involvement of organized crime.
“I believe that the fact that organized crime has already become involved means that this is already a federal matter,” she stressed.
The request comes as the Michoacán Prosecutor’s Office intensifies an investigative line examining Quiroz’s possible connection to Samuel García Rivero, a former municipal official who is facing proceedings for allegedly leaking information about Manzo’s movements to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
On August 26, the state prosecutor’s office detailed that the new investigative actions stemmed from statements by Yesenia Méndez, Manzo’s former private secretary, who said that Quiroz allegedly recommended García Rivero and later rehired him at the Uruapan City Government.
Finally, her lawyer, Víctor Zúñiga, said that Quiroz will hand over to the FGR the cell phones belonging to Manzo that have been requested by the Michoacán Prosecutor’s Office, citing her lack of trust in the state authorities.
“They will be handed over to the Attorney General’s Office because we cannot trust anyone who is spreading gossip, so to speak, trying to incriminate a woman,” Zúñiga said.
