Tragic highway accident in Nuevo León leaves 12 dead

At least 12 people died in a car accident in the Sierra de Santiago, Nuevo León.

The tragedy was reported at kilometer 14 of the highway to Cola de Caballo, near the community of Los Comales.

Initial investigations indicate that the driver of a van lost control of the vehicle and went off the road in the mountains, also causing a forest fire.

According to information from the Nuevo León Civil Protection, 12 people died in the accident and five were injured, who were taken to various hospitals.

So far, authorities have not identified the bodies or specified whether the individuals were vacationing or residents of the tourist area.

Rescuers from the municipalities of Santiago, Monterrey, San Nicolás de los Garza, García, and Conafor arrived at the scene.

The uniformed officers carried out the necessary work to extinguish the fire and search for other possible victims. Paramedics from the Mexican Red Cross and the Ministry of Health also remained at the scene.

Mayor issues statement

For his part, Santiago Mayor David de la Peña confirmed the tragedy and stated that at least 18 people were traveling in the vehicle.

The mayor reported that due to the emergency caused by the accident, a road operation was implemented on the highway to restrict the passage of motorists who do not live in the area.

“Search and rescue efforts continue in Los Comales after a vehicle was reported to have gone off the road and overturned. At least five people have already been taken to a hospital for medical treatment, and we are sadly aware of 10 deaths. Rescue efforts will continue with the Nuevo León Civil Protection, Santiago Civil Protection, the Red Cross, and the various agencies that responded to the scene,” the mayor stated.
