American fighter Joe Pyfer, who was unable to enter the ring to fight Kelvin Gastelum at the UFC event in Mexico City due to illness, harshly criticized the country for the issue and asserted that he will never return.
Pyfer was scheduled to main event Gastelum at UFC Mexico. The matchup was one of the most anticipated of the entire card, but Pyfer was forced to withdraw hours before the event due to unspecified “health issues.”
Shortly after the news was confirmed, Pyfer shared a message on social media in which he expressed his deep sadness at having to withdraw from the fight and his hope of rescheduling it in a few weeks.
Pyfer later shared a more extensive explanation of what happened in a video, in which he harshly criticized the country, after confirming that he had a stomach ache.
Pyfer said he attended a team dinner but did not drink water during his entire stay in Mexico before the fight.
“I went to dinner, ate something at a place I was supposed to trust, and yes, a couple of hours later, I got diarrhea,” Pyfer said in a video posted on Instagram Stories. “I think I pooped at least 10 or 11 times. I went from 94 kilos, I think, more or less, while still hydrating, to 88 kilos the morning of the event.”
On her Instagram profile, there’s a video showing part of her preparation in Mexico, with a visit to the Pyramids of Teotihuacán, and ending with the weigh-in ceremony, which she completed without problems.
“I had a fever, nausea, obviously. Vomiting, unbearable stomach pain, and the doctor, like me, didn’t think it was prudent to fight like that,” the fighter said in the other video.
EXPLODES
After these explanations, Pyfer raised his voice, apparently responding to criticism he received on social media for not going up to fight.
“And I know it’s not what everyone wants, but I have to take care of myself, my health, and what’s best for me. Believe me, I’m upset too.”
Pyfer explained that the process of bringing his family and friends to the fight, but not being able to compete, was also a financial blow because he wasn’t paid. He hopes to keep the fight against Gastelum, because he believes it’s a good fight that makes sense.
Closing his video, Pyfer harshly criticized Mexico. Although he admitted he wasn’t sure what caused the illness, Pyfer vowed to never return to Mexico, calling the country “a shithole.”
“I don’t care if they get offended, I’ll never go back to that country,” Pyfer said.
“I did everything right. I slept in a tent. I did all this work to get sick. Some people say it wasn’t the food that gave me altitude sickness. I’m not a goddamn geographical scientist, you know, or a goddamn altitude scientist, but I was told that as long as I acclimatized, which I did for two months, sleeping in a tent, on the goddamn ground, you know, I did everything I could to prepare.
“If that’s altitude, fuck that country. I’m never fighting there again. A shithole. I’m not going back. I don’t care if it offends you. You’re not the one fighting. Suck my balls. Literally,” the American fighter concluded.
