An analysis of a total of 2,337 samples collected at 393 sampling points revealed that 98 percent—or 283 beaches—meet standards for recreational use, while six contain fecal enterococci and microorganisms that are harmful to health, reported the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).
The beaches considered unsafe are mostly located in Baja California. This is the case with Rosarito Beach and Rosarito Beach 1, in the tourist destination Rosarito; as well as Tijuana Beach and Tijuana Beach 1, in the border city of Tijuana.
These are also Icacos Beach in Acapulco, Guerrero, and Sayulita in Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit.
Furthermore, 98 percent of Mexican beaches are considered suitable for recreational use during the current vacation period.
“The rigorous analysis of the first sampling of the ‘Clean Beaches 2025’ program included a total of 2,337 samples from 393 sampling points and revealed that 98 percent—or 283 beaches—meet the standards for recreational use, while six beaches showed results above 200 MPN fecal enterococci/100 milliliters (ml) of water, in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO), meaning they are unsuitable as they pose a health risk.”
Cofepris Calls for Action on Beaches
Cofepris coordinated with the state Areas of Protection against Sanitary Risks (APCRS) and the National Network of State Public Health Laboratories (RNLESP) of Baja California, Guerrero, and Nayarit to encourage the Beach Committees—of which state health authorities are members—to implement immediate sanitation actions to achieve optimal conditions and prevent health risks for both national and international tourists.
Such was the case of Oasis Beach, located in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, which was considered unsuitable in the previous monitoring corresponding to December 2024. This time, however, it obtained a favorable result in the first sampling in 2025, and is now classified as suitable for recreational use.

Cofepris Calls for Keeping Beaches Clean
Cofepris urged the public to keep beaches clean during the holiday season, as it is everyone’s responsibility to preserve these natural spaces.
Any anomalies related to water quality can be reported directly to the Beach Committees established in the country’s various tourist destinations.
