Motorists whose vehicles carry objects that obstruct the visibility of their license plates may be subject to a fine ranging from 2,262.8 to 3,394.2 pesos, plus impoundment, according to Article 91, Section I, Subsection b, of the Traffic Law Regulations for the State of Querétaro.
The text states that: “Cars circulating in the state are prohibited from carrying objects that obstruct the visibility of their license plates, and they must be placed in the location designated by the manufacturer.”
The current Units of Measurement and Update (UMA) indicate that the violation for this offense is 20 to 30 times and the automatic impoundment of the vehicle, in addition to a penalty point on the driver’s license.
The aforementioned article lists the causes that merit a vehicle fine. It requires that metal license plates be placed in the location designated by the vehicle manufacturer, free of any object or substance that hinders or obstructs visibility or registration, and must have neon lights surrounding them.
The rule also states that the numbers and letters must match the permanent registration decal, the vehicle registration card, and vehicle control records. They must also have the dimensions and characteristics specified in the respective Mexican Official Standard. In the case of motorcycles, the license plate must be placed in a visible location, facing the rear of the vehicle, at an angle between 60 and 120 degrees, based on its horizontal axis.
Regarding the lights known as “strobes,” Article 78 states that: “The use of any device such as sirens, turrets, strobes, codes, or any other device reserved for emergency vehicles provided for in the Law is prohibited.”
It adds that those who fail to comply with the provisions of this chapter will be sanctioned as follows: A fine of 5 to 10 times the equivalent of the Unit of Measurement Update (UMA). This ranges from 565.7 to 1,131.4 pesos, plus a penalty point on the driver’s license.
Regarding the use of tinted windows, which can be another of the most common causes, the Traffic Law Regulations for the State of Querétaro, in Article 77, Section III, specifies that vehicles may not have tinted windows or objects that obstruct visibility inside the vehicle.
The fine is the same as for the use of strobes or prohibited lights; that is, 5 to 10 times the equivalent of the Unit of Measurement Update (UMA), ranging from 565.7 to 1,131.4 pesos, plus a penalty point on the driver’s license.
