A high-risk operation carried out in Tijuana, Baja California, resulted in the tragic death of Officer Abigail Esparza Reyes, a member of the State Citizen Security Force (FESC).
According to the agency, the operation was intended to execute an arrest warrant against a fugitive from the United States, who was allegedly in Mexican territory.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in the Barcelona Residencial neighborhood, specifically near the Barcelona private street.
According to the information provided, Officer Esparza Reyes was wounded by gunfire while attempting to carry out her duty. Although she was initially assisted by her colleagues and later by paramedics, she did not survive her injuries.
Following the attack, a joint operation was deployed in and around the area, involving members of various agencies.
At the time of writing, it was reported that agents from the Municipal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPCM), National Guard (GN), and members of the Secretariat of National Defense (Defense), as well as members of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), were at the scene.
General Laureano Carrillo Rodríguez, representing the security forces, expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Esparza Reyes.
In his message, he highlighted the officer’s bravery and dedication, who distinguished herself through her participation in significant arrests of fugitives from justice, both from the United States and other countries.
The Governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, spoke out against the murder of the officer in Tijuana.
“I deeply regret the death of State Citizen Security Force Agent Abigail Esparza Reyes, while participating in an arrest warrant operation currently underway. My recognition goes to the officers who are participating bravely and exemplarily in this operation,” the governor wrote on social media.
Images of the alleged fugitive, identified as César Hernández, began circulating on social media. Unofficial information indicates that he escaped dressed as a cleaning worker.
