The Mariachi Summit, a gathering of musicians of this genre that will take place from April 17 to 19 in the resort town of Acapulco, Guerrero, seeks to be part of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration’s strategy to promote Mexican music abroad, including in the United States, but without addressing the issue of violence.
The musical event will take place at the GNP Seguros Arena and will feature 24 groups from different countries performing Mexican music. There will also be a food exhibition, and the closing ceremony will be led by singer Pepe Aguilar, accompanied by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.
Mundo Imperial’s director, Zeyed Rezvani, said at a press conference this Friday that all of the group’s companies have worked and collaborated with the federal, state, and municipal governments to create content and international musical and sporting events to attract tourism to Acapulco, which suffered from Hurricane Otis in October 2023.
“We have created content, not only in music, but also with sporting events, so that people come to visit us. The cultural aspect is very important, the gastronomic aspect is very important, and we have worked with the federal government, as they are talking with other tourism segments,” he stated.
Rezvani emphasized that authorities, citizens, and the private sector must align themselves with a “short-, medium-, and long-term strategic plan; we will have a better tomorrow.”
In a press conference at the GNP Arena, one of the three venues for this summit, Igor Lozada, director of entertainment and content for Mundo Imperal, indicated that this summit will feature 24 mariachi groups from Los Angeles, in the United States, and from countries such as Colombia, Croatia, China, Japan, and, of course, Mexico.
This year’s event will feature guest groups from the states of Aguascalientes, Mexico City, Jalisco, Guerrero, Zacatecas, and Puebla.
“We’ve been in contact with a mariachi from Los Angeles, thinking about the Mexican-American community… we have a lot to think about, what mariachi means to Mexicans,” he noted.
Lozada said they are “focusing on Colombia, which has a tradition. What mariachis do there is impressive, as well as in Croatia, and it’s becoming very popular at festivals. The Japanese and Chinese perform impeccably.”
He mentioned that the Mariachi Summit aims to be a free zone, as well as to unite all mariachi groups. “Our intention is for it to be a place that fosters the evolution and transformation of mariachi and dignifies this genre,” he stated.
The organizers indicated that, for next year, they will seek to hold an international mariachi competition, as they have found countries “where they never imagined mariachis existed.”
The meeting will be held at the GNP Seguros Arena, where there will also be folkloric ballets, a food showcase, an artisan bazaar, and a closing concert by singer Pepe Aguilar accompanied by Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.
