The president of the Puerto Vallarta Hotel and Motel Association, Álvaro Garciarce Monraz, described the state government’s withdrawal of the “Riviera Nayarit” name from Puerto Vallarta International Airport as a mistake, arguing that it was a way to promote the Tepic airport. He pointed out that the brand was already established and that this decision only creates confusion.
However, he pointed out that tourists continue to refer to the destination as “Puerto Vallarta,” which is part of a metropolitan area along with Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit, with whom the destination is jointly promoted.
“I believe that, from my perspective—and after some lobbying from people in the tourism industry—it’s a mistake… because there’s already an established brand: Riviera Nayarit, or Nuevo Vallarta, or Nuevo Nayarit; no one knows what it’s really called anymore. The important thing would be to make it very clear to our visitors and business partners what the destination’s name is. We clearly know that much of the foreign market doesn’t say they’re going to Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit, or Punta de Mita; they say, ‘We’re coming to Puerto Vallarta.’”
Regarding the Tepic-Riviera Nayarit International Airport, also known as Amado Nervo International Airport, Garciarce ruled out that it represents a threat to tourism in Puerto Vallarta.
“I don’t think so, and even less so with the infrastructure being planned here in Puerto Vallarta. I think it will be incredible. I know the project; it’s been shared with me, and I’m convinced it will be a world-class airport,” he emphasized.
