Cell phones in Nayarit will be able to receive direct alerts from Civil Protection regarding risks other than earthquakes, such as tropical cyclones, floods, and landslides, through the Cell Broadcast system, which allows alerts to be sent to all devices located within a specific area without relying on internet access, mobile data, or account balance.
The new regulation establishes three main types of alerts. The “Maximum Earthquake Alert” will retain its characteristic signal; for high- or very-high-risk emergencies caused by other phenomena, a new “Maximum Alert” will be used, with a 10.5-second sound played at maximum volume, vibration, and a pop-up window on the screen. Meanwhile, “Civil Protection Notices,” intended for prevention and preparedness, will use the normal sound that each user has configured for their notifications. Reception of these three categories cannot be disabled by the user.
The modifications were published on August 28 in the Official Gazette of the Federation. The technical provision for cell phones will enter into force 60 calendar days later, on October 27; from that date onward, existing devices that have the necessary components may incorporate the new functions through operating system updates, meaning that their activation will not necessarily occur at the same time on all models.
