Former mayoral candidate Carlos Cruz Cardozo has voiced support for an anonymous complaint alleging that Mayor Magdalena Jiménez Pacheco intends to allocate 280,000 pesos per month to hire two law firms for financial reporting services. Cruz Cardozo, whose wife is a member of the City Council, criticized the mayor for failing to address pressing social issues such as water shortages and deteriorated streets.
Cruz Cardozo emphasized that public services remain a challenge for municipalities across the state due to population growth and the emergence of new neighborhoods. He argued that mayors must proactively plan public works and services to accommodate these developments. He accused Jiménez Pacheco of using a lack of resources as an excuse to neglect priorities, instead outsourcing tasks that could be handled by municipal staff, such as those in the Comptroller’s Office or Administration Department. This approach contrasts with the municipality’s 2025 budget allocation of over 104 million pesos.
The former candidate also raised concerns about the legitimacy of the council meeting agenda, which includes a vote on hiring the law firms. He claimed the agenda was posted by a fake profile under the name of Councilman Yair Rebolledo but noted that the emails sent to his wife corroborate the authenticity of the documents.
One of the firms slated to receive 150,000 pesos is reportedly owned by Antonio Arévalo Pacheco, brother of Benito Arévalo Pacheco, director of the Campeche Comprehensive Port Authority (Apicam) in Seybaplaya. While the firm is legally established and experienced, Cruz Cardozo recalled previous accusations during the campaign that the state agency had provided public funds to Jiménez Pacheco. He suggested this connection could indicate a conflict of interest.
Cruz Cardozo urged scrutiny of the decision, highlighting the potential implications of hiring a firm with ties to an institutional official amidst ongoing concerns about transparency and governance.
