Transporters protest on the Mexico-Querétaro highway

“Enough with the violence, murders, and kidnappings on federal and state highways,” declared members of the Union of Tourist, Passenger, and Cargo Bus Owners (UPAC) during a demonstration they held on the Mexico-Querétaro highway for nearly four hours.

Using the vans they use for work, they blocked two of the three lanes of the toll road heading toward Querétaro to demand security.

During the demonstration, which began around 9:30 a.m. and ended just after 1:00 p.m., they denounced being victims of abuse of authority, corruption, excessive towing fees, a lack of safe bus stops, high toll booth costs, and poor road conditions.

“We hope for public understanding and support from all transporters to ensure safe roads, reduce toll fees, and reorganize transportation. Enough with the abuse of authority,” stated the members of the owners’ union.

The drivers involved in freight and tourism transport asked federal and state authorities for help in curbing the insecurity they claim to be victims of on highways like the Mexico-Querétaro highway. “We are tired of living like this; we no longer want extortion or kidnappings of highway operators.”

They also mentioned that there are members of the National Guard in the State of Mexico who extort them, and they also noted that the roads are dangerous and unpatrolled.

On the banners they showed to the authorities who approached them to discuss the roadway clearance and to the motorists passing by, they wrote slogans such as: “Every 23 minutes there are assaults on the highways, and with increasing violence” and “Enough with the violence, murders, arson attacks on transportation, and vehicle theft.”
