The use of a plastic bottle as an improvised oxygenation device for a newborn at the Macuspana General Hospital in Tabasco has led to the suspension of the hospital’s director and administrator. Authorities are investigating potential equipment shortages at the facility.
During a press conference, Adalberto Pérez Lanz, coordinator of IMSS-Bienestar in Tabasco, confirmed that medical staff, including a pediatrician and a nurse, resorted to using the plastic bottle to oxygenate a newborn experiencing respiratory distress caused by meconium, a substance made of amniotic fluid, mucus, and skin cells. The improvised action reportedly helped stabilize the baby, who required immediate care.
Director and Administrator Suspended Amid Investigation
The incident gained widespread attention after a photograph of the newborn with the plastic bottle, fashioned as a helmet, circulated online. Pérez Lanz announced an investigation to determine whether the hospital faced a shortage of medical supplies, the duration of any such shortages, and whether administrative protocols were followed. As a result, Édgar Huerta Ortiz, director of Macuspana General Hospital, and the hospital administrator were suspended. The deputy director has temporarily assumed responsibility for the facility.
Pérez Lanz emphasized that no punitive action would be taken against the pediatrician and nurse involved, acknowledging their efforts to save the child’s life with the available resources.
Newborn’s Condition Stable; Ongoing Monitoring in Chiapas
The baby, whose family hails from Tila, Chiapas, is reportedly in stable condition and recovering at home. Pérez Lanz confirmed that health officials are in close contact with the family and have ensured the child’s follow-up care through IMSS-Bienestar in Chiapas.
The authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to address the reported issues and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
