In the last two weeks, the number of dead sea turtles found along the coast of Playa Larga and Playa Blanca has increased, raising concerns among residents, tourists, and environmentalists. In some cases, the turtles are already in an advanced state of decomposition.
Yesterday, four dead turtles were found in Playa Blanca, while in Playa Larga, a tourist from Querétaro reported the discovery of another dead turtle. These cases are in addition to the recent stranding of a baby dolphin and a whale, also dead.
Iván Pineda Ríos, a volunteer at the Ayotlcalli turtle camp, reported that the bodies were buried following the protocol of the Mexican Official Standard. Although the cause of the deaths is officially unknown, he reiterated the need to maintain vigilance and continue with programs to protect marine species.
Environmentalists are calling for increased monitoring of this coastal strip, where olive ridley, black sea turtles, and leatherback turtles arrive to lay their eggs each year. The community hopes that environmental authorities will conduct the necessary investigations to determine the origin of the phenomenon.
