‘Chiapas is a disaster’ amid rising violence: Frayba

Dora Robledo, director of the Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Human Rights Center (Frayba), warned that Chiapas is experiencing a crisis aggravated by armed violence, forced displacement, and the authorities’ failure to address the situation.

“Chiapas is a disaster,” Robledo stated in an interview with “Aristegui en Vivo,” where she shared data from the report “Chiapas in the Spiral of Armed and Criminal Violence,” prepared by Frayba.

Robledo explained that the report is based on direct testimony from victims in the communities, “especially indigenous peoples.”

Among the topics addressed are forced displacement, enforced disappearance, torture, and territorial control exercised by armed groups and private companies from 2021 to the present.

The organization has documented at least 15,780 displaced people, mostly in the border area and the Chiapas Highlands.

Robledo criticized the fact that, while conflicts continue, the state government promotes Chiapas’s tourist image.

“We are very concerned that this is not being seen and that the reality we are experiencing is not being discussed.”
