On Sunday, May 18th, at noon, there will be a concert at the Las Grutas del Mamut ecotourism park in San Cristóbal de Las Casas to celebrate Mother Earth and the legacy of Miguel Álvarez del Toro, founder of the zoo that bears his name in Chiapas. This year, the concert for marimba and symphony orchestra, “The Spirit of the Earth,” premiered in London in 1984, as announced by maestro Federico Álvarez del Toro.

Miguel Álvarez del Toro was an environmental scientist born in Colima but based in Chiapas from 1942 until his death in 1996. His legacy lives on in the environmental sector. At Zoomat, more than 1,300 specimens of more than 200 species of wildlife are exhibited in a tropical wildlife enclosure.

In an interview, Maestro Álvarez del Toro mentioned that international musicians from Italy, Chile, and Chiapas will participate. Inside the caves, the music is like a cathedral, projecting peace and spirituality. The place is 300 million years old and is a space where the arts and sciences blend, giving rise to music.

For the first time, a high-level concert will be held there. The type of music is contemplative and seeks a deep connection with nature. Upon entering the caves, one feels something very welcoming, ancient, and sacred, and that is what will be celebrated: a meeting of music and nature in memory of Mother Earth and a great illustrious Mexican environmentalist, founder of the Miguel Álvarez del Toro Zoo.

In addition to this concert, another major event will be held on May 30th at the Emilio Rabasa City Theater, featuring a State Band, the State Symphony Orchestra, a Japanese and a Chiapas marimbist, and a choir, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the creation of the symphonic work The Spirit of the Earth, dedicated to the international marimbist from Chiapa de Corzo, Zeferino Nandayapa Falda.
