Through meetings with the Secretaries of Tourism and the Mexican Council of the Meetings Industry (Comir), the Public Trust for the Development of Meetings Tourism in Yucatán (Fideture) announced that they will seek to reposition Yucatán and Quintana Roo as two pioneering destinations in the sector in the southeast, through a council to govern these events and to enhance their promotion.
Fideture’s general director, David Escalante Lombad, emphasized that, as part of the powers returned to the organization during this administration, they recently met with authorities from Comir, Quintana Roo, and Mexico City to help the country climb the ladder in attracting international events.
He noted that it is “very cool” that Yucatán is considered one of the states with good potential for hosting congresses and conventions. For this reason, he emphasized that work has been done on a campaign that will soon be launched to attract national and international events.
“We haven’t stopped. We’ve met with medical associations, schools, sports and animal specialists, and the commercial sector and with brands, presenting the benefits of our destination and promoting it at events held in Mexico City and Madrid to generate incentives,” he noted.
He noted that they have also competed in initiatives to win events and generate a significant national presence, so that when Yucatán participates again, it will win more events that can generate significant economic benefits for all companies involved in the industry.
At a snapshot of the first quarter of the year, Escalante Lombard detailed that 36 congresses and conventions have been held in the city of Mérida, with an estimated economic impact of 350 million pesos during the period and an average attendance of 18,000 participants.
“Furthermore, we understood that January is starting off a bit slow, but so far we have very good numbers, very good economic returns, and good attendees. We also have good news for the remainder of 2025, as at least 86 events have been held through this department this year,” he noted.
He explained that, including other events held at other venues, such as hotels, halls, and other venues, the number of congresses totals more than 100 for the remainder of the year, along with a revenue of more than 800 million pesos.
“But I am confident that at the rate we are going, we will surely close with an economic revenue of more than one billion pesos this year, and ultimately more than 45,000 attendees at these 86 events we have registered,” he concluded.
