Supreme Court Justice Lenia Batres encountered strong opposition during her visit to Tabasco as part of her campaign for the upcoming judicial elections on June 1. Videos circulating on social media captured groups of protesters wearing donkey ears and chanting “Out, out, out” to the beat of drums, expressing their disapproval of the minister.

The demonstrators carried signs with messages such as “Lenia, the minister of ignorance” and “The Batres family is synonymous with nepotism.” The protest occurred while Batres delivered a keynote address organized by the Tabasco Bar Association. Despite the backlash, Batres shared footage on her social media accounts showing supporters entering the venue and voicing slogans in her favor.

During her visit, Batres also toured the Gaviotas neighborhood in Villahermosa to discuss judicial reform and encourage residents to vote for the initiative. While viral videos highlighted the negative reception, Batres emphasized the support she received and her efforts in the region, which is closely associated with former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The minister’s campaign has taken her to various states, including Morelos, the State of Mexico, Guanajuato, and Querétaro, as she seeks not only to retain her position on the Supreme Court but also to preside over the nation’s highest judicial body. Her national tour began on April 30 in Mexico City and continues to generate mixed reactions across the country.
