The Port of Progreso, Yucatán, is set to undergo a transformative expansion, tripling its capacity to solidify its role as a primary gateway for goods to the Yucatán Peninsula. This ambitious initiative, spearheaded by the Secretary of the Navy, Raymundo Morales, was highlighted during a recent visit by President Claudia Sheinbaum to the port.

The project involves enlarging the docking platform from its current 34 hectares to an impressive 80 hectares. Admiral Morales emphasized that the expansion would enable the port to accommodate vessels with capacities of up to 80,000 tons, doubling the size of ships currently handled. “This will position the Port of Progreso as a vital entry point for goods to the Peninsula,” Morales stated.

President Sheinbaum, in a social media post, noted the significance of the expansion for southeastern Mexico. She announced that the tender process for the project had commenced, marking a key step in its realization. “In collaboration with @SEMAR_mx and @GobYucatan, we are expanding the Port of Progreso. Together with Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, we are advancing the Mayan renaissance,” she wrote.

Governor Díaz Mena hailed the initiative as a historic milestone, projecting that the port’s enhanced capacity would sustain its growth for the next five to six decades. He highlighted the potential for Progreso to emerge as a strategic logistics hub, attracting investment and fostering shared prosperity. “This project aligns with the vision of President Sheinbaum to create a more connected and prosperous Yucatán,” Díaz Mena remarked.

The expansion of the Port of Progreso is poised to significantly boost regional connectivity, trade, and economic development, reinforcing its strategic importance in Mexico’s southeast.
