This Friday or Saturday, the Morelia Zoo will inaugurate an innovative 360-degree fish tank, the first of its kind in Mexico, designed to offer visitors a unique, immersive experience in its aquarium.
In an interview with MiMorelia.com, the zoo’s director, Julio César Medina Ávila, shared that this project began in 2022 during a supervisory tour with Profepa staff, who noticed the considerable growth of one of the zoo’s rays. “The ray is already very large; in circumference it must measure more than 60 or 70 centimeters; it’s an adult animal. The tank it was in was already too small for it,” he explained.
Faced with the need for a new, suitable space, the team decided to design a specialized tank that would replicate the natural freshwater and mangrove ecosystem where this species lives. “It’s very difficult to build a tank like this, but we already have it built; it needs the final touches,” Medina Ávila said.
The final check will be carried out on Wednesday to ensure everything is dry and completely sealed, while filling will begin on Thursday. If all goes according to plan, the inauguration will take place this weekend.
This new three-dimensional fish tank will be located in the center of the aquarium, allowing visitors to enter a submerged cylinder, giving them the sensation of being inside an aquatic habitat. They will be able to observe various species such as manta rays, other varieties of rays, catfish, and other species endemic to mangrove ecosystems.
The experience will be open to people of all ages, consolidating the Morelia Zoo as a national benchmark in innovation and conservation.
