Veracruz Mourns the Loss of Candidate Germán Anuar ‘Napo’ Amid Electoral Campaign Violence

The candidate Germán Anuar “Napo” Valencia, running for mayor in Coxquihui, Veracruz, was assassinated during the first day of electoral campaigns in the state.

According to reports from the Attorney General’s Office (FGE), five individuals were injured in the attack, including a minor. The victim had been shot at his campaign headquarters and rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries hours later.

Luisa María Alcalde Luján, Morena’s national leader, expressed her condolences on social media: “We lament and condemn the murder of Germán Anuar Valencia, candidate for Mayor of Coxquihui, Veracruz. The @GobiernoVer and the @FGE_Veracruz are already investigating this deplorable incident.”

The attack occurred in a community within the municipality, where armed men arrived at the candidate’s campaign headquarters and opened fire. Police reports stated that the politician was shot and transported to a local hospital, where his condition was described as critical before he ultimately passed away.

With the start of electoral campaigns on Tuesday, Veracruz is set to renew its 212 municipal presidencies, along with 212 sindicatures and 630 regidurías, and 98 state judicial positions. A total of 12,142 candidates are vying for these positions, while 262 are running for judicial seats. The election on June 1 will see over six million voters casting their ballots at 16,469 polling stations across the territory.

The assassination marks a disturbing beginning to the electoral campaign in Veracruz, raising concerns about the safety and security of candidates and citizens alike during this critical period.
