The Durango State Attorney General’s Office (FGED) issued a new alert to warn citizens about identity theft attempts through the popular WhatsApp messaging app.
According to the agency, scammers pose as technical support staff for the platform, using phone calls or direct messages within the app. In their communications, they falsely warn about alleged problems with the user’s account or report suspicious activity with the aim of obtaining personal information and account access.
The Attorney General’s Office warned the public about messages or calls from phone numbers with international area codes, especially those with codes +57 (Colombia) or +1 (United States). When faced with this type of contact, it is recommended not to share personal information, not to click on provided links, and to verify the identity of the caller directly through WhatsApp’s official technical support function.
Another important measure is to log out of all devices where unauthorized access is suspected to prevent unauthorized access and protect personal information.
Authorities emphasized that, in an increasingly digital world, cybercrime represents a growing threat. Today, organized criminal groups exploit vulnerabilities in networks, computer systems, and infrastructure, generating serious economic and social consequences globally, affecting governments, businesses, and individual users alike.
The FGED urged everyone to remain vigilant, protect their personal data, and report any suspicious activity to curb these crimes, which directly impact the population’s digital security.
