The Mexican Hotel Association of San Cristóbal de Las Casas publicly denied the hotel occupancy figures presented by Mayor Fabiola Ricci Diestel for the Easter holiday period.
In a statement signed by Verónica Alcántara Martínez, president of the hotel association, she clarified that the recorded occupancy was actually between 30% and 60%, figures well below those mentioned by the mayor, who reported an average of 50.47% and up to 80% on some days.
“Observing people walking along the walkways does not necessarily represent a real economic impact or tourist influx,” the document warns. It also emphasizes that the official data used by the association is generated using a statistical formula validated by the State Tourism Secretariat, which guarantees its reliability.
According to the report, average hotel occupancy from April 11 to 17 was 36%, while on April 18 and 19 it peaked at 60%. Therefore, the association considered that the figures presented by the city council “are far from the reality experienced by tourism-related businesses in the city.”
Finally, the hoteliers called on the mayor to establish effective collaboration between the municipal government and the business sector to strengthen the tourism promotion strategy, boost formal commerce, and foster local economic development.
